General Discussion / Re: Opinions on 'W' Strafing
« on: July 10, 2013, 05:23:58 PM »
I always use the '+forward' key (for me, 'E', not 'W') with and without the strafe keys whenever I play, whether its competitively or just jumping, and I often tackle jump maps backwards as well. This is how I started back in the days of the original Quake and its just a habit that I just may never break.

Bottom line: I am not a professional and most likely never will be. That said, it is not impossible to employ this style, however for modern shooters it is best to take the advice from the professional jumpers of today.

I stopped playing TFC after 1.6 came out (and ruined both TFC and CS). These types of jumps were very common for trick jumping, though quad jumping (which I don't have any interest in) was by far the most popular.

Originally when the mods were released you could bunnyhop all over the place. Grenade damage, as opposed to QWTF, was ridiculously over powered, making the scout class pretty broken in the game (along with the engineer's EMP). The first jump would be the hardest to pull off from all of these due to the fact the jumper had to land on the ladder (which would be equivalent to landing in the water in TF2 to avoid fall damage). The rest is about right as the power from the splash damage would be increased exponentially I believe (due to the Quake 2 engine, which the Gold engine was just a tweaked version of Q2's).

As for the changes after 1.6, I cannot say. It also depends on the server settings as the settings can affect the gameplay for rocket jumping, same as it did for QWTF.

New Maps / Re: Me Made a Map

There is no shame in creating beginner maps, everyone has to start somewhere. If the amount of advanced jumping maps greatly out number the amount of beginner maps, then kudos to you for stepping up and trying to fill in the gap. The majority of players are beginner jumpers (out of the people who try), and the advanced maps scare them away. More maps like this may encourage them to stay and perhaps take their skill further once they raise their confidence.

Mapping Tutorials / Re: Getting started...

Would be very easy to setup. As for software, there is plenty of free software out there that will record the screen, in mpeg4 no less. Anyhow, was just a thought. This site could take off if people put in enough effort, but may end up going by the wayside (like the others). This is unfortunate too cause the FPS community needs such a site.

With all that time spent replaying the same game, this site could easily be so much more if you dedicated the same time.

Hmm, I would get in the habit of adding quotations around the command.

While you guys are on binds, might as well delve further into aliases, scripts, and perhaps editing the configuration files for a customized setup.

New Maps / Re: New map help

For multiple buttons opening a door, its just a bunch of func_buttons that when activated (by however you want) will add a value to a math_counter, and when a certain value is reached, the door opens. So if we have 3 func_buttons, and when each one gets pressed, it adds '1' to math_counter. We set math_counter to have a max value of 3, so when all three buttons are pressed, it will equal '3'. All you need to do is add a triggered event to the math_counter to open the door when it reaches the value '3' (and one to reset it).

You can also decompile any map, load it up in Hammer and take a look.

Since the people here are certainly dedicated, it'd be nice to associate this site different then other tutorial sites. One way of doing this is by having everyone agree on a map that meets specific criteria (i.e. a jump map that features specific jumps, can be big/small, whatever you all choose, nothing hard) and then have each mapper record video of them creating the same map. This would let people who are new (or experienced) see how the same map is made in different ways, allowing people to either learn a new trick or two, or a whole new style that fits them. It also gives the site some media to host and if you spread the word enough, will be linked to and possibly rage the site's ranking.

Just food for thought.
