General Discussion / how many people are still around?
« on: August 22, 2013, 12:59:30 AM »
hey all, its been months since ive even opened hammer, but ive had things running around in my head for what feels like ages now, and basically ive been wondering if the serious jumpers are even still playing now...

i have wanted to make a jump map that goes way beyond what i did with jump_bomb but if the demand isn't at least somewhat there i dont see the point. if you'd be interested in a followup map to _bomb let me know and i will try to make my ideas a (virtual) reality. it would be a fluid map with no tele doors hopefully and be for intermediate to advanced difficulty. definitely harder than jump_bomb if the difficulty curve ends up like i hope.

hope all is well, love bombs

wow man this map is absolutely beautiful! great job with the textures! while the emphasis on speedshots makes it a little annoying personally i really dig the feel of this map and like glow said this is definitely your best yet! keep making the maps man!

awesome ideas, but I can barely see...

not to parrot drexen here but I hear this complaint from a small number of people while 99% of the people I talk to about it say its fine. If people had told me it was too dark when i was testing it then i would have brightened it up. I suggest you increase your game brightness or adjust other video settings on your computer if you're legitimately having trouble seeing. If you have your brightness on the lowest setting it is indeed much too dark to play so try increasing it : )

General Discussion / Re: Good intermediate soldier maps

.  I think 'intermediate' players could probably beat most of these jumps if they put the time in, but it's definitely the upper end of the intermediate scale.

idk man soar 16.... that jump had me stuck for months

glad you liked my map bud.

tbh im pretty surprised to hear people praising jump_heavy what with its very strange spacing and frustrating final jump but hey i guess it is good for learning.

like exile said cheval is a great map for intermediate jumpers, and its also worth noting that 'intermediate' might mean different things to different people. ipersonally i'd say that anyone who has gotten pretty familiar with the common techniques is probably 'intermediate.' that'd be stuff like speedpoogs, speedshoots, wallpoog, triple syncs, and advanced strafing stuff.

on the easy end of 'intermediate' we have maps like littleman blue, tholos, 4starters C, and sexydev and then as it gets harder we have maps like yucca, cheval, junk_solly, ayers2, natural, mouser, and i'm not sure if i'd say that heaven, rook, or style are intermediate at all, but rather advanced instead.

another point of interest is that 2 maps may be around the same difficulty but for completely different reasons. i have problems with mouser because it has a few downpoogs which im pretty shit at, wheras yucca has that stupid bastard moving platform to window jump that i can't stand.  i mean according to kairu here im a complete scrub if soar, littleman red, and annex red are 'intermediate' but there you have it, just goes to show its kind of subjective.

cheers

General Discussion / Re: Favourite Jump Maps?

cheval might be perfect, it probably is if you exclude 27 which some people dislike. koi is probably my favorite demo map, and visually speaking volcanic is really nice.

i also really dig tholos and dystopia for the blend of unique jumps and technical chops.

Besides that, I didn't really feel like this thread was created for people to give each other psychology lessons or anything, but rather just share stories with each other.

tell that to rooskie

yami ive been wondering for a long time now if that is sarcasm or just random caps lock adoration.

I've been thinking hard about ideas for more jumps, and I've decided I'm going to add 5-10 jumps to jump_bomb. The first cp will still come after the first 20 jumps, but these jumps will be an extra course at the end once you reach the first cp. I'm thinking up some challenging, creative jumps and hopefully people will like them. Also, I plan on adding 1 or 2 extra bonus jumps that revolve around the anti grav theme that my first 3 use.

Maybe some of you dislike the bonuses because they are silly or gimmicky. Well, thats why they are bonuses. #1 is supposed to introduce you to the zero grav, #2 is just a neat idea that hasn't been done before in jump maps. and #3 is a mix of the anti grav with more conventional ideas.

#2 specifically has turned some people off and I think thats because its too easy. However, it is interesting because you can drastically change the speed you're going when you finish it by continually strafing. New jumpers may not realize this but by strafing left and right (and i mean strafing as in WITH moving the mouse accordingly like on any jump) you can increase your speed. If you keep doing it you can actually travel faster than a rocket by the end of the "jump". Its the main mechanic used in long jump maps from CS.

anyway you can imagine an extended bonus #3, where you go through an anti-grav strafe, like an upside down quba 3-1. ceiling syncs! all sorts of shit! Since making another entire map doesn't seem like something I'll likely do, you can bet i'm going to milk jump_bomb for all its worth until you're sick of it.

been taking a break from computer games for work and books, but hopefully i will soon be jumping again and return to the average level of skill that i once had.

happy new years!
