General Discussion / Re: Jumpers getting into competitve TF2
« on: March 21, 2012, 02:55:50 PM »
I've tried getting into comp tf2 a couple times in the past. the first time was a disaster as i had no idea what i was doing and wasn't quite skilled enough to make it. The second time I started playing on tf2lobby which was decent except the pugs i played in had ZERO communication among teammates. seeing how communication is absolutely necessary for comp play, this kinda made things difficult, not fun, and generally lame.

I guess all i could suggest is if TF2Jump had an amateur team that anyone can join and play in to get a feel for comp play. We could just do pugs or whatever, even if we lose its still getting experience in a setting that is more supportive than just pugging with random people who may or may not talk to you. Think of it as TF2Jump's own recruiting/training team.

Having an experienced comp player like you cbear would be a great way to glue a team of noobs together and get everyone familiar with how comp play works. you can read all the comp guides you want and watch all the youtube comp tutorials, but you really don't have a clue what you're doing until you start playing.

I remember when i started jumping i was on weed's server with a 200 ping failing miserably at pagoda. 1 took me like an hour to do because i kept falling and then i spent another hour on 2 before giving up. came back the next day and spent another 2 hours on 2 before finally figuring it out. hundreds of hours later i now can clear several maps with ease and get pretty far on a good number of the tougher maps.

same goes for all the other forms of jumping. the first time i saw someone conc i remember thinking "that shit looks incredibly tough". then i tried it and it's fun as hell. same for demo and engi jumping, both of which i'm slightly better than mediocre. just sucks that there are maps that are impossible for engi.  :(

the bottom door on jump_quba, though it does get tougher. fyi, the bottom door is the same thing on baqu and abuq as well, though i think quba changed that in the latest version of baqu.

Jumping from Fargo, North Dakota. Pretty sure I'm the only jumper in the state so i guess that makes me the best. Mainly solly though i'm getting better as demo (i can sticky pogo now  ;D). I also like jumping in real life. google kiteboarding if you don't already know what it is.

General Discussion / Re: How did you ultimately get into jumping?

I used to only play DoD 1.3 when i was in middle school/ high school. But then my brother showed me a Quake 3 jump video (Tricking iT 2 I believe. Excellent vid. Very nice production.) and that got jumping in my head. I downloaded Q3 and just started messing around with rocket jumping, trying to imitate the jumps on the vid. I had tons of fun. Unfortunately I didn't continue with it much so I was still a jump noob when i stopped playing Q3.

Then TF2 came out. One of the first things I noticed about the game is that the soldier was actually encouraged to rocket jump. So I started playing around on maps, perfecting height jumps and stuff. But it wasn't until i stumbled upon the Chillout Zone that i really started jumping a lot.

First jump map i played on was pagoda, and i could barely get up the pagoda. then the second jump had me stumped for like a week. Fortunately another jumper gave me some hints and i made it across. Then i just kept going, trying new maps and new jumps, eventually getting into demo jumping and all that. Now i'm to the point where i'm starting to actually finish maps instead of just trying to get as far as i could.

favorite jump is upTown's quintuple rocket jump where he jumps between the rockets. @3:06 in part 2

I've been playing on JumpiT and Chillout Zone for a while now and I figured I'd stop by and say hello on the forums.  ;D
