Whenever i try to ctap I always go much higher that a normal rocket jump but I can never seem to be able to translate that into distance. Doesn't seem to matter how far away from the explosion I am, I always go a horizontal distance about equal to a standard rocket jump. I'm sure I'm just doing something stupid but any advice would be appreciated.

i had the same problem a few weeks ago and it was pretty hard to get it. i guess ctap while running is harder but i learned it just though training. first do the ctap when you stand still try to get it everytime(jump_measure helps) then go bball and try it with forward movement. it takes a lot of time so training is all

what i did to learn it was to stand still first practice jump flicking your view back when u ctap. The once u master doing that u start pressing W

Best solution is to not flick at all.  Just start strafing left with A, slowly realize where you're going to want to aim (close to you for height, a bit further for distance), then ctap.  I recommend the same with jumping too.  Take it a bit slower and aim.  Hours upon hours of slow practice will make quick flicks muscle memory.
