How To: The Basics
Tutorial Written by: GNCMatt

The Basic Jump:
So in this section we are talking about the simple act of placing a sticky on the floor, and blowing it up to propel you to places otherwise unreachable. We will be talking about it for the purpose of jump maps, but this can also be very useful for normal game play.

Crouch Jumping:
This is the single most important part of the sticky jump.  The crouch jump consists of three steps:

  1. Crouch
  2. Jump
  3. Detonate

Now this list is somewhat misleading. Steps 1 & 2 should really be one step, because you want to do it ALMOST at the same exact time. The timing of all this will change how much propulsion you will get. For now we will just leave the Crouch-Jump portion at, just press them almost at the same time but crouch a tiny bit first. One common mistake people make when I try to explain this in game is that they will hold crouch, then press jump and detonate. This will not work because you cannot jump while you are fully crouched. For the majority of your beginning jumps, you will crouch jump, then wait until you are at the peak of your jump, then detonate. This paragraph turned out more confusing then I intended, I'll come back later and make it more friendly.

Another important concept I forgot which I'm just tagging onto the end for now, is your position relative to the sticky. Meaning, if you are directly on top of your sticky when you detonate, you will go straight up. If you are in front of your sticky when you detonate, it will launch you forward. Most of your learning experience of the basics will be spent on this concept, trying to find the correct position over your sticky to launch you to the place you want.

2 Sticky Jump:
So the same concepts from above apply here, so I'm only going to talk about the new things you need to know.

The distance between the stickies will change the distance you get. The closer together the stickies are, the further you will travel. But that is not always what you want, separating your stickies gives you a bit more control over your jump.

3 Sticky Jump:
The 3 sticky jump is a bit rare compared to using 1 or 2 stickies. The only times you should really use 3 stickies is when you need more forward distance (not height!) then 2 stickies can offer. You must be very careful when using 3 stickies, especially if you are on a server without a mod that saves your position. The most common method of using 3 stickies is to place them in the shape of a triangle, and jumping quite a bit ahead of the stickies so that they don't kill you.

Air strafing:
Air strafing is the other big concept of jumping. Air strafing is when you use your STRAFE keys in the AIR to "float" around to get to where you want to go. The biggest mistake people make is they hold down forward "W" while strafing. That is a big no-no. There is a certain type of strafe you can hold forward for, but that is irrelevant in my tutorials so from this point forward, as soon as you detonate your sticky, do not press forward again until you land.

There are two parts to strafing. The first part is holding the strafe key of the direction you want to go. So if you need to strafe to the right, hold down right. The second is your mouse movement. You want to make smooth mouse gestures in the direction you want to go, at the same time you are holding your strafe key.  If you turn too fast your back will be facing your movement direction and you still just stop in mid air and fall straight down.
