Mapping Tutorials / Some stuff
« on: October 01, 2012, 12:38:21 AM »
I've been getting asked some basic questions by a few ppl, so I'll just list some resources out there...

If you want to start making maps here's a solid guide:
http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=807

and some other links...
tf2maps.net
http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=4674 (DLing this won't hurt)
interlopers.net/errors (post your compile log to check for errors)
http://gamebanana.com/textures (this is where I browse for custom textures)
http://gamebanana.com/css/textures/cats/28 (custom skyboxes)
http://www.youtube.com/user/rocketrascal34/videos?view=0 (good/specific video tutorials)
http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=1617 (useful console commands)
http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=7011 (lighting library you can steal from)

let me know if there are any major mapping resources I'm completely missing out on...

I'm thinking about making a video tut of me making a jump map start-to-finish with commentary. Maybe something like 3 lvls cuz a whole map would be too many videos. Should I do it? I'm hardly a good mapper, but I feel like there is a real demand for tutorials in the jump community, whether it be for jumping or mapping.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quick guide to getting rid of the 30 second set up time.
Place these two entities anywhere in the map: logic_auto and point_servercommand
Name the point_servercommand (it can be any name).
Setup the output tab of the logic_auto to look like this. In the 'target entities named' field, write whatever the name of your point_servercommand is.
That's it. Alternatively you can use a trigger_once brush instead of the logic_auto and place it over the spawn point, with the same output settings.
Whatever / tf2 or hammer in offline mode
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:28:24 PM »
Is there a way to play tf2 or hammer without internet? A quick google search is telling me no, but maybe I'm missing something.
I don't understand why there's even an option to use steam "in offline mode" when you need to be fucking connected to steam to do it. It's mind boggling how you can't play anything on steam without internet... even a single player game like skyrim.
Mapping Tutorials / Moving and rotating objects?
« on: July 17, 2012, 11:46:32 AM »
Can someone tell me how to make moving/rotating objects or link me to an accurate tutorial? I know func_rotating doesn't work in tf2 at least...
Also I'm curious to know if it's possible to move/rotate point entities like light objects.
Requests / Some suggestions
« on: June 27, 2012, 10:19:53 AM »
It seems like no one is working on the timers at all but here's some suggestions regardless...
1. Separate leaderboards for demo/soldier/medic. I don't understand why they're all integrated into the same leaderboard.
OR
Make the default leaderboard the class that the map was made for when you call !top. Like if you say !top on littleman it will show only the soldier times as default or on koi it'll show only demo times (and there will be a toggle button to show all times for all classes).
2. A world record page. Basically just a separate webpage for the top times for each map, and perhaps making  it so that the players provide a demo of the run also, just for learning purposes. A separate toggle on this WR page would show which players have the most world records. The main reason I want this is that you don't need a functional timer in the server, just send in your demo and someone in charge will regulate it (there was a program used to make sure the game settings were default, so you couldn't send in a demo with sv_gravity 700 or something. If this suggestion actually comes to fruition, I'll try and find the program again, although it was for cs 1.6 so idk if it'll work for tf2 as well).
I hope I didn't come across as hostile in any way, I just care about my hobby :D
I honestly wish I knew how to program plugins or develop the WR page, but I don't know enough to do it. I know a bit of python and java, so maybe it's possible, perhaps someone can tell me how to go about starting it? I'm definitely willing to work on it...
Mapping Tutorials / Mapping resource
« on: June 17, 2012, 06:05:10 PM »
In an attempt to quicken the map-making process I made a vmf as a template to use. Everything you need to know is in the readme.
http://www.mediafire.com/?rztt12w19zavk6z
The vmf features:
- Everything you would need to set up a level (teleports, regen, numbers)
- Two alphabets
- Numbers 0-9
- A few common words for jump maps
- Miscellaneous stuff like death rooms, staircases, pumpkin bomb setup, etc
- Some complex brushwork structures (arches/columns)
- Sync heights and other distances to use as references
- Buttons to open a door
- Cap points
Hope you find it useful :)
General Discussion / Timers on jump it/jujump it
« on: May 30, 2012, 09:43:26 PM »
Surely I haven't been the only one to notice. The timers are completely gone now, on every map. Idk what's going on, but seeing how there seems to have been no awareness of the issue on these forums I made this topic.
